One of Dave Picardy's trainers at North Shore CrossFit wrote the following. I liked it and decided to post it.
When I first started working in the fitness industry I had a boss that loved to use metaphors. Every meeting was jam-packed with one brilliant metaphor after another. In fact we never really talked about fitness or even the business in our meetings. At least the rest of us didn’t. We always just got lost in the metaphors. It was quite frustrating at the time, and not at all conducive to business or employee morale, but one concept stuck with me. My boss saw his vision of the company, a branch of a large non-profit organization, as a “northbound train.” Essentially, you were either on board the train, or you were left out in the dust. I jumped off the train and ran in the opposite direction when I realized that being on the train meant making no money to work long hours and be abused by an unpleasant clientele; but I’m stealing the metaphor anyway.
My vision of fitness is that of a life-long journey. This is my “northbound train” and all of my clients are on it with me. There are many stops along the way and we pick up and drop off passengers quite frequently. We pick up new clients, and we lose clients. We pick up new research, and we throw out fitness myths and junk science. Little by little, over a long period of time, we pick up knowledge and understanding from clients, coaches, and our own training, and we slowly throw away what we thought we know about fitness piece by piece. As the journey continues northward we constantly change and adapt. We become more efficient in all aspects. My physical training, my nutrition, my recovery work, my family life, my business practices, and my coaching abilities all grow daily. They are ever changing and ever improving.
